Shayne Mogg, alias ‘Moggy’ – Fishing Guide at Skippers

Our guests love a fishing charter with Moggy whose love for the NT is apparent and who happily shares what he’s learned, a few tall tales and plenty of stories with those he meets and greets at Skippers.


The best thing about being a fishing guide at Skippers is . . .

… Getting to see the look on a clients face when they tick off a bucket list fish whether it’s a Barra, Jew Fish or a Big Spanish Mackerel.

 

The worst part of my job is . . .

I am not sure there is a worst part but after a long day on the water cleaning the boat followed by cleaning the fish is the part of the day that seems like time is standing still.

 

I love the NT because . . .

I personally feel like I belong to this part of our beautiful country and the land and sea that surround it. I just have never found anywhere else in the world that has the rugged beauty and charm of the NT.

 

Growing up I thought I would be . . .

Well this is possibly as far removed from tourism as it gets but I wanted to be a palaeontologists or work in astronomy. I have always and still find both of those fields very intriguing.

 

The thing that always makes me laugh is . . .

most of the simple things in life. My Blue Healer Milton is always good for a laugh. Clients on board the Red Mullet are always good for a story from previous trips or how a nickname may have arisen.

 

The best advice I ever received was . . .

Find something you love and make a career out of it and you will never work a day in your life.

 

My friends would say I am . . .

Well they would probably say I have ADHD and have a tendency to change my mind or shift my focus in a split second. I think they would also say I’m always willing to lend a hand when things are may be tough.

 

My secret talent is . . .

that I can play the Yidaki (Didgeridoo) pretty well.

The best thing about working together is . . .

Many minds and hands always achieve a much more desired result for everyone.

 

People are most surprised to know I . . .

am probably a bit if a nerd at heart and spend most nights drifting off to sleep listening to lectures about Thermodynamics, String Theory, or Quantum Physics.

 

My motto in life is . . .

Not sure it’s a motto but a quote from a 1934 movie starring Clark Gable has always been etched into my mind. I guess it just reminds to make the most of each day and not get bogged down by the things in life we can't change or control.

“Die the way you lived, all of a sudden, that’s the way to do it. Don’t drag it out, living like that doesn’t mean a thing.”
